Minakami Onsen is one of Gunma Prefecture’s most iconic hot spring destinations. Nestled along the pristine Tone River, where the scenery transforms beautifully with the four seasons, stands a ryokan with a truly commanding presence: Gensen Yu no Yado Matsunoi.
“Is there a place where the whole family can be happy?” “I want high-quality hot springs.”
Matsunoi is the place that fulfills these heartfelt wishes. Based on our family’s experience visiting last September, I want to share the magic of this destination.
1. The Magic of Minakami in September: Climate and Atmosphere
September in Minakami is a golden season. The summer bustle fades, and the gentle whispers of autumn begin to arrive.
- Climate: Pleasant during the day, with a refreshing coolness at night that makes you crave the warmth of the onsen.
- Scenery: The mountains are a deep, lush green, and strolling through the gardens is a delight.
- Comfort: Since it’s just after the summer holidays, the facilities are relatively quiet, allowing for a relaxed stay.

2. Reasons Why Families Choose Matsunoi
What makes so many travelers return to Matsunoi? It’s more than just a stay; it’s about the environment.
- Vast Grounds: A 33,000-square-meter Japanese garden that refreshes your soul just by walking through it.
- Luxurious Springs: Four private in-house sources providing “living” hot spring water without any dilution.
- Family-First Hospitality: Facilities and service that welcome three-generation trips and large families with open arms.
- Dynamic Buffet: Fresh dishes prepared right before your eyes in a lively kitchen.
- Endless Activities: A pool (summer), lounges, and a kids’ space to keep everyone entertained.

3. The Room: Spacious Comfort for a Family of Five
We stayed in a Japanese-style room that provided ample space for our family of five (an elementary schooler, a 5-year-old, a 3-year-old, and two adults).
The rooms at Matsunoi harmonize nostalgic tranquility with modern cleanliness. From the window, the sound of the Tone River and the meticulously kept garden instantly melt away the fatigue of travel. For families with small children, the “Washitsu” (Japanese room) is a huge advantage. Sleeping side-by-side on futons is a precious bonding time that becomes a lifelong memory.

4. The Onsen: Insights from an Onsen Sommelier
As an Onsen Sommelier, I was deeply impressed by Matsunoi’s dedication to the water.
Four In-house Sources
Matsunoi owns four distinct hot spring sources, blending them with exquisite balance to create a “Calcium/Sodium-Sulfate/Chloride” spring.
The “Living” Water (Nama-no-yu)
What makes this special is that the water is never diluted and is managed so it never touches the air until it reaches the bath. You can feel the freshness—the water has a soft, gentle texture that seems to embrace your skin.
- Tsuki-akari no Yu: An open-air bath where you can soak under the starlit sky.
- Hi-akari no Yu: A modern, relaxing atmosphere with enchanting lighting.
- Hotaru-akari no Yu: A calm indoor bath where you can truly feel the minerals of the spring.

5. Dining: A Feast for All Ages
The buffet at Matsunoi is legendary for a reason.
- The Live Kitchen: Chefs prepare authentic sushi, crispy tempura, and juicy roast beef right in front of you. The sights, sounds, and aromas make every meal an event.
- Kid-Friendly Variety: From favorites for elementary schoolers to toddlers, the selection is vast. Even our picky 3-year-old’s eyes lit up with the joy of choosing their own food.
- Local Bounty: Using fresh vegetables and specialties from Gunma, the dishes offer a deep, authentic taste for adults, perfectly paired with local sake.

6. Living the Grounds: Exploring 33,000 Square Meters
Matsunoi is a place to “play” as much as it is to “stay.”
- The Japanese Garden: Walking through the vast garden in the cool September morning air is the ultimate refreshment.
- Reading Lounge: A quiet space to enjoy a coffee while getting lost in a book.
- Kids’ Space: Having a dedicated area for little ones to release their energy is a huge help for parents.

7. Tips for a Smooth Family Stay
Based on our experience traveling with three children, here are a few ways to make your stay even better:
- Bathe Early: To avoid the crowds, I recommend heading to the onsen around 4:00 PM.
- Be First at the Buffet: Aim for the start of the meal service. The food is at its freshest, and it’s easier to secure a comfortable seat for the whole family.
- Include Garden Time: Rather than staying in the room, taking the kids out for fresh air in the garden keeps everyone in a great mood.
